HSBC was established in 1865 as the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

HSBC first began operating in Poland in 1990 as an investment services company, HSBC Investment Services (Poland) Sp. z o.o. In 2003 HSBC bought Polski Kredyt Bank, which officially changed its name to HSBC Bank Polska S.A.in 2004 (now HSBC Continental Europe (Spółka Akcyjna) Oddział w Polsce). In 2007 it set up a back office which has developed over time into a global service centre which now employs nearly 6,000 people.
